UNIT 1 Essay
UNIT 1 Essay UNIT 1 Essay UNIT 1 Conner Le Vaast Task Local Community. UNIT 1: INVESTIGATING SCIENCE AT WORK: TASK 1 Summary of Varying Research Methods. The research methods that I chose to use, would be the Internet, using contact via E-mail, conversing over the phone, word of mouth and using the phone book. I found these research methods to be simplistic, easy to manage, and undergo, as they are all efficient, easy to access and use on a basic daily life, the internet being widely available nowadays and a fast, easy method of gathering information on the many scientific businesses in my area. The internet is easy to access, and easier to find information on varying businesses in the local area, able to research the common answers to the questions in general that I need to ask in order for this task. E-mail being similarly easy to access, sharing the same advantages but also possessing rather large disadvantages as e-mail requires the recipient to be there, to reply and give you the information that you are desiring. Verbally conversing over the phone, requires both you and the person you are wishing to talk to, to be there at all times, though the information you are receiving can be recorded and make track of, for future use, this also having both advantages, and apparent disadvantages, due to possible poor connection. Word of mouth, is often the most rewarding manner of receiving information, as you are physically there, talking to a person that either owns, or runs the business, and are able to get the information straight up, able to note it down as you feel the need, for use in the future and in my own opinion, is possibly at a disadvantage, as you need to ensure you are there at a suitable time or day, as quite a few businesses are not open at most times. Finally, using a phone book is often handy, but you cannot get the information you need directly, without making use of another form of communication, this most likely being the telephone, in this case in particular. To conclude, all of these methods of gathering information have their own advantages and disadvantages, and you can mix these, to minimise the disadvantages while collecting the data you need. Evaluation of Research Methods. Business and what I got out of it: Shred-it: From this business, I learnt the basic processes of shredding and destroying paper waste and the importance of this in the working world, as well as the basic business and management qualifications required to work there. Future Cleaning Services ltd: This is a business that deals in commercial cleaning and the disposal of products in the vaying scientific manners that they undergo as well as communal area cleaning and upkeep, dealing with cleaning material and supplies also, this requiring basic scientific qualifications to effectively work in this business. Morley Chinese Acupuncture and Herbs: This business deals with Muscular and neurological clinic, skin problems (warts, vitiligo and urticarial) clinic, infertility clinic and other similar treatments, this requiring some basic and advanced qualifications to work in, due to the nature of the work here. Spectrographic ltd: This is a business/service that deals with metallographic products and equipment for material science analysis and quality inspection procedures, as well as specialist advice in material sample perception, computer based image analysis and microscopic inspection, this obviously requiring rather advanced qualifications to work in, these mostly needing to be scientific. Nation wide laboratories ltd: These are independent veternity laboratories dedicated to the improvement of animal health through direct support of veternity practices in the UK and worldwide for the last 30 years, these requiring specific veternity qualifications to work in , due to the nature of the service. Chinese Politics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Chinese Politics - Essay Example These students were against the failure of the state to mourn Hu Yaobang who was the CPC General Secretary and a symbol of liberal reform and a clean government to them. They were joined by allegiances that were against the communist and in need of economic reform and liberalization. The response of the PRC to the peaceful protests was repressive in nature and an absolute violation of human rights.2 The government had warned the protesters of drastic actions to control the ââ¬Ësocial chaosââ¬â¢. True to their words, army action was taken against the protesters and they were shot dead.3 Given that the troops sent by the PRC were unable to enforce martial law in the face of 100,000 protesters who had protested for seven weeks, they resorted to open fire indiscriminately on the protesters and this saw thousands of protesters killed thus making it the major turning point of the history of China. Apart from the killings, many other protesters together with their supporters were arrested and foreign press banned from the country thus leaving the coverage of events to be controlled strictly by the PRC press. The government used every possible measure to crush the uprising thus enabling it to remain in power. Russia and Eastern Europe faced an economic crisis as their economy performed poorly hence attracting public intervention. This led to protests against the government which was successful as it resulted in the displacement of the communist government. China, on the other hand, did not fall even though it faced similar challenges like the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe since it successfully suppressed every uprising. In addition, the economic performance of China was not declining given that years later under the same party the country has made tremendous progress economically.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
The Color Purple by Alice Walker - Essay Example Biographical information Alice Walkerââ¬â¢s birthplace was in Eatonton, a small city in Georgia. Her father (Willie Lee Walker) was basically a farmer, and her mother (Minnie Lou Walker), a maid. Unlike other African American parents during 1940s in America, Walkerââ¬â¢s mother was interested in her daughterââ¬â¢s education. She did not allow her daughter to be a worker in the farm or to work as a maid. Instead, she tried her level best to provide proper education to her daughter. One can see that Walkerââ¬â¢s future life was deeply influenced by her motherââ¬â¢s decision to lead her towards education. Stephanie Fitzgerald states that, ââ¬Å"From the time she was young, Alice knew that the world was a different place for a black child in the South than it was for a white child anywhereâ⬠(22). So, Walker completed her school education. Later, she decided to continue her education and attended Spelman College and another college named as Sarah Lawrence College. Wh en she was a college student, she got attracted towards social activism and this changed her life. For instance, Walkerââ¬â¢s activism related to the Civil Rights Movement in America is noteworthy. Besides, Walker considered that anti-war protest/activism was important to extend her service to the needy. Walkerââ¬â¢s personal life proves that she was ready to accept diversity. For instance, she married Leventhal in the year 1967. One can see that this marriage was revolutionary because Walker is an African American and Leventhal, a Jew. On the other side, Walker provided ample importance to her career as a writer because she knew that dealing with burning issues in the society is not different from social activism. Plot: The Color Purple The novelââ¬â¢s plot is interconnected with the sad plight of an African American girl in the American society. The narrator of the novel, named as Celie, faces a number of problems in her family. Celie was helpless because her parents did not try to provide proper education to her. Besides, she was forced to undergo sexual exploitation from her step-father. Katharina Eder makes clear that, ââ¬Å"At the beginning of the story the reader learns, how Celie, then a 14 year old girl is raped by her, then thought to be fatherâ⬠(5). Eventually, her mother dies and her father became uncontrollable. Her father did not allow Celieââ¬â¢s sister (Nettie) to marry Mr. Johnson. Instead, Celieââ¬â¢s father forces her to marry Mr. Johnson. Within this context, Celieââ¬â¢s personal life became more problematic because Mr. Johnson treated her as a slave, not as his wife. At Mr. Johnsonââ¬â¢s home, Sofia (Mr. Johnsonââ¬â¢s sonââ¬â¢s wife) taught Celie that women must not subdue to men. Once, Mr. Johnsonââ¬â¢s lover (say, Shug Avery) happens to be ill and undergoes bed rest at their home. Gradually, Celie gets attracted towards Shug. On the other side, Sofia was not ready to be under the control of her husband and she deserts her husband. In addition, Shug began to interfere into Celieââ¬â¢s personal matters and helped her to know more about her sister. Later, Celie happens to know that her sister is alive and is working with a missionary in Africa. Besides, Celieââ¬â¢

Factors that Affect Self Esteem
Factors that Affect Self Esteem According to social psychological research, which factors affect self-esteem? How people regard themselves and evaluate their self-worth or self-esteem differs from one individual to the next. However, there are multiple factors that might affect an individuals self-esteem, these factors can include domestic treatment, group treatment and even the media. It can be hypothesized that one factor might affect self-esteem more significantly than the others. Social psychologists have seemed to agree that the social environment (while it does have its affects) has a minor influence on self-esteem. According to Schmitz, (2006) how children are treated domestically will have a significant influence on the development or lack thereof of self-esteem. Furthermore, other studies seem to also share similar conclusions; Belobrykin, (2003) conducted a study that explored self-esteem and its influencers, it was concluded that teachers and parents are the main influencers of self-esteem. Teachers and parents are both seen as authoritative figures, as well as much more knowledgeable. Therefore, how they treated children, especially during developmental stages will have a psychological effect. Although social influences might have an affect it can be inferred that the main influencers are authoritative figures due to how children might seek acceptance and validation. Hence forth if the child does not get what they intend as stated formerly it will aff ect them negatively. However, through the excess of information and communication in the modern age, a large emphasis is placed on the media and its role in affecting self-esteem. Although, the media does play a role in affecting self-esteem, according to Fernandez and Pritchard, (2012) social media influences how both men and women should look. However, although the media seemed to have the greatest effect, for women social pressure also affected self-esteem and for men it was internalization. Therefore, it can be assumed that social media simply acts upon peoples already existing self-esteem issues and that there is a different criterion such as social norms and standards or group treatment combined with how a person might view themselves to be. Self-esteem issues have always existed long before the media, however, it can be stated that the media is simply a catalyst that increases or aids in increasing low self-esteem. The media affects self-esteem though indirectly. For instance, how people perceive themselves versus how they want to be perceived, to elaborate further what people place on social media is what they want you to perceive them. Zuckerman, Li and Hall, (2016) conducted an experiment that explored what affects self-esteem between different genders. The research concluded that gender differences do not play a role in self-esteem, though it appears that these issues were more present in developed countries than in under-developed countries. This can be due to how more developed countries are characterized by values of equality or freedom, which in turn can affect how people perceive they should be treated versus how they are actually treated. Furthermore, other studies have also stated that how individuals perceiv e themselves also affects how they are aided in social situations, which can also affect self-esteem further. This implies that how people are treated can affect perception (Marshall, Parker, Ciarrochi, Heaven, 2013). In conclusion, self-esteem is not affected by just a single stimulus, however according to psychologists the main influence on self-esteem is domestic treatment in developmental stages of the child as it affects self-esteem on the long-term. Therefore, it is an individuals perception of what others might think of them which highly affect self-esteem. Furthermore, the media does not act a direct influencer of self-esteem, it is however an indirect cause of self-esteem issues. This is apparent as this issue is more present in highly developed countries. References Belobrykina, O. (2003). Prose and Style in Sons and Lovers :: Lawrence Sons and Lovers Essays
à à à à à à à [1]And after such an evening they both were very still, having known the immensity of passion.à [2]They felt small, half afraid, childish, and wondering, like Adam and Eve when they lost their innocence and realized the magnificence of the power which drove them out of Paradise and across the great night and the great day of humanity.à [3]It was for each of them an initiation and a satisfaction.à [4]To know their own nothingness, to know the tremendous living flood which carried them always, gave them rest within themselves.à [5]If so great a magnificent power could overwhelm them, identify them all together with itself, so that they knew they were only grains in the tremendous heave that lifted every grass-blade it's little height, and every tree, and living thing, then why fret about themselves?à [6]They could let themselves be carried by life, and they felt a sort of peace each in the other.à [7]There was a verification which they had had together.à [8]Nothing could nullify it, nothing could take it away; it was almost their belief in life. à à à à à à [9]But Clara was not satisfied.à [10]Something great was there, she knew; something great enveloped her.à [11]But it did not keep her.à [12]In the morning it was not the same.à [13]They had known, but she could not keep the moment.à [14]She wanted it again; she wanted something permanent. [15]She had not realized fully.à [16]She thought it was he whom she wanted. [17]He was not safe to her.à [18]This that had been between them might never be again; he might leave her.à [19]She had not got him; she was not satisfied.à [20]She had been there, but she had not gripped the-the something-she knew not what-which she was mad to have.
